Voices

Stories from the ground.

CSE is designed for every young person, not only those most easily reached through mainstream, in-school, urban programming. The YPAR voices below showcase the real life positive outcomes experienced by Youth in Malawi, Ethiopia and Uganda after receiving age-appropriate and accurate CSE.

“I decided to abstain [from sex]. I am not ready to engage in those things.”

In-school youth, Uganda

“[CSE] has really helped me. Understanding my body has been helpful, I know when and what to do.”

In-school youth, Malawi

“I feel confident… using condoms and getting regular health check-ups is essential. I often report this and tell other kids about it.”

Out-of-school youth, Ethiopia

“… during the lessons, we were taught how our bodies change with time and how to manage those changes; we also get counselling where they talk to us about how to behave and manage ourselves during adolescence…”

In-school youth, Malawi

“the lessons help us know what to expect as we grow because the teachers tell us the signs of adolescence and that these are normal. They tell us how to respond once the signs show, they also tell us to abstain so that girls don’t get pregnant and also protect ourselves from HIV.”

In-school youth, Uganda

“I can make decisions about that because my boyfriend wanted me to get pregnant, but I don’t want to now. I will be turning 21 [years old] next year so maybe by then I will think about it, but now, I refuse.”
